BioNews Texas Report: Student Team Wins Venture Competition

The report

On 5 June 2013 a regional life-science news outlet described how eight undergraduates had won the student technology venture contest run by the University of Texas at San Antonio. The prize was $100,000, awarded for a thermoelectric cooling prototype for prostheses and for a plan to market it.

The team

Engineering majors Austin Darius, Jake Montez, David Schultz and Gary Walters worked with business majors Nam Do, Eric Michael Garza, Enrique Medrano and Justin Stultz under the name Leto Solutions.

The pitch

The aim was better comfort by dealing with warmth at the contact point between limb and prosthesis. That spot sees plenty of rubbing, so the article said trapped warmth and moisture may bring infections, damaged skin, sores and blisters. Experienced wearers often grow toughened skin there, it added, yet the worry never fully goes away.

The technology

According to the story, the Aquilonix design builds a thermoelectric element into the socket itself, letting the temperature there be managed and, it claimed, sharply cutting heat and perspiration for a better fit.
