University Announcement: Student Team Wins $100,000 Contest

The announcement

A university press release dated 1 May 2013 said that eight undergraduates had taken first place in the $100,000 student venture competition run by its entrepreneurship centre. The final was held on 30 April, alongside the campus’s inaugural technology symposium.

What they built

Their entry combined a working thermoelectric cooling model, meant to make prostheses more comfortable and hygienic, with a plan for selling it. The release explained that heat builds up where a residual limb meets the socket, leading to sweat and sometimes to infection, skin breakdown, ulcers or blisters.

The team

Four of the students studied engineering (Austin Darius, Jake Montez, David Schultz, Gary Walters) and four studied business (Nam Do, Eric Michael Garza, Enrique Medrano, Justin Stultz). Two other student teams took second and third place.
