O&P Edge Report: Prototype Cooling System Wins UTSA Contest

Trade-press coverage

On 3 May 2013 a trade publication for the orthotics and prosthetics field carried an item about eight undergraduates in San Antonio who took the $100,000 first prize at their university’s student venture contest, organised by its entrepreneurship centre. The award rewarded a thermoelectric cooling prototype together with a commercial plan.

Why the problem matters

The item explained that people with amputations who wear prostheses often experience discomfort because heat accumulates where the residual limb meets the prosthesis. Sweat follows, and the article listed possible consequences such as infection, damaged skin, sores and blisters. The system was presented as adding comfort and hygiene.

Who was on the team

Engineering: Austin Darius, Jake Montez, David Schultz and Gary Walters. Business: Nam Do, Eric Michael Garza, Enrique Medrano and Justin Stultz.
